What we usually find

Most WiFi problems in commercial premises are not solved by switching provider. They are solved by working out why the signal is not reaching where it needs to reach. In a restaurant it is the kitchen walls and the metal of the cold rooms; in an office, a single router at one end trying to cover the whole floor; in a shop, the till network sharing bandwidth with the customer WiFi.

The first thing we do on arrival is measure. That tells us whether the problem is coverage, channel congestion, the router, or the line coming into the building — and we tell you which of the four it is before touching anything.

Common jobs

Configuring and replacing routers and access points; spreading coverage across several access points instead of one; separating the internal network from the guest network so a connected customer cannot see company equipment; network cabling and new outlets; switch replacement; and channel tuning where lots of neighbouring networks are competing, which is the most common cause in the north's commercial areas.

We also set up guest networks with their own password and their own speed limit, which is worth doing if you offer customer WiFi and would rather one large download did not take your till system down with it.

What a business network needs that a home one does not

Separation between what staff use and what customers use, so an unknown device cannot reach shared folders, printers or till systems. Priority for whatever takes the money: if the POS or card terminal shares a line with the dining room WiFi, the POS comes first. And hardware that copes with many simultaneous connections, because the domestic router that works fine in a flat chokes on thirty phones.

If your existing setup already does all this, we will say so rather than sell you equipment you do not need.
